Incubator Humidifier: Mark Wu

Best Awards 2012: Bronze.
Every year five million infants die worldwide as a result of low birth weight and infection. Microbiological contamination within incubators in developing world hospitals may be up to 10,000 times that of incubators used in developed world hospital environments. Through a rigorous experimentation and prototyping process an extremely novel humidification system was invented. At the heart is a porous ceramic labyrinth where warm dry air is blown through the unit picking up moisture as it travels. A ceramic material was selected from a wide variety of substrates that were interrogated in a specially designed controlled environment. The ceramic medium has the added benefit of providing superior filtration and wicking properties while remaining very low cost.
