Pedestrian Traffic Lights for Pokémon Go Safety

 

smart-tactile-paving-by-buro-north_dezeen_936_0In response to an increase in traffic accidents involving pedestrians playing Pokémon Go, Australian company Büro North designed an in-ground traffic light system targeted at pedestrians using smartphones.smart-tactile-paving-by-buro-north_dezeen_936_1“When the Pokémon craze hit Melbourne, the number of people wandering across the road looking at their phones was pretty startling. That’s when we realised we had redundant infrastructure that had not adapted or evolved to keep up with human behavioural changes.”smart-tactile-paving-by-buro-north_dezeen_936_4The system leverages existing infrastructure with the ground based LEDs powered by existing traffic light cabling.
